Sign-in issue - VPN issue?

I have an EU who is having difficulty signing back in to LC when she allows her computer to go into screen saver mode. She is connected via VPN to our network. she has internet access. I don't know if she has a firewall on her router. After she enters her password, she gets this error message:

"cannot sign in to communications server. you may have entered your sign-in name, username or password incorrectly, or the authentication service may be incompatible with this version of the program"

Is there something we need to change on the authentication service to fix sign in issue?
Is this VPN related?
